Jodi, Thank you so much for sharing these pages with me. I greatly enjoyed them and look forward to more. You have a very keen and practiced eye for telling detail. But most impressive is your ability to convey the differences in culture so deftly and, from my experience, so absolutely authentically. I think the public is going to find your cross-border story to love. I'm honored to have been allowed to give it a look.

You have a great gift for choosing just the succinct, core image that will produce a whole series of impressions of time, place and relationship. "I Left You Standing Waiting for the Train" presents a situation that could have been cliched or self-indulgent and instead is full of really fresh, straightforward imagery. I like the disjunction of the lovers being described in terms of island and sea, watershed, wake, tempest, etc. -- and then the parting takes place by train, showing just how far they are from the rapport of the night before. Just about anyone else would have had him leaving by ship!

I like "The Deal" even more. If you ever get the chance to step up during a poetry reading (they must still have them someplace where people sit nodding sagely over strong coffee), do this one. Again, so direct, NOT self-indulgent, and with a great kicker at the end. This is really good stuff.

I was totally immersed in this manuscript and disappointed when it ended. Very rare.

Your writing is fabulous, and no one can teach you that.

I read every word of this and was completely galvanized. The writing is so facile and the story nearly a horror tale, and for me, that kept me turning the pages.
